Sport and Sports Academy
Sport plays a big part at St Philip's College with opportunities to learn in and out of the classroom. The College supports a number of Sports within it's sports Academy as well as hosting sports carnivals each term.
Sport Carnivals
In addition to Physical Education classes, St Philip's students play a wide range of sports. All students are encouraged to participate in order to develop skills, learn to compete enthusiastically, fairly and to co-operate unselfishly as a member of a team. The College runs one major sporting carnival per term which parents are welcome to attend.
Sports are played on a House, interschool, intra-town, intrastate and interstate basis. Staff and senior students coach a large number of St Philip's teams which play in town competitions. These include cricket, basketball, netball, volleyball, soccer, AFL and rugby league.
The College holds four inter-house competitions a year in which all students take part: Summer Carnival, Winter Carnival, Cross Country and the Athletics Carnival. Students also have the opportunity to compete in the Interschool Swimming Carnival.
House Sport
Students are encouraged to take part in House Sport. Held weekly during our long break, students compete in a different sport each term against other House teams to compete for the the House cup.
St Philip's College Sports Academy
Members of the Sports Academy commit to a training program before and after school twice a week during term time. Access to the Sports Academy provides students with an opportunity to not only develop their skills in basketball / volleyball / mountain biking but the training will also maintain and improve their physical health and wellbeing.
Improvement with engagement and performance in other classes and school activities is also another benefit. We believe that striving to become a better player leads students to become better people and that coachable students become employable adults.
Bentley Bombers
The Bentley Bombers is an institution at the College, and began at St Philip’s in 1996. The team was then coached by Garry Bentley who was a new teacher to the NT.
‘Footy’ began, following a desperate and persistent request from a delegation of half a dozen girls wanting to learn and play AFL, “like the boys”.
We acknowledge the Arrernte people as the traditional custodians and first educators of Mparntwe. Our school is home to students from nations all around the world. We ‘strive’ to work with and continue learning from First Nations people. We ‘seek’ to be a part of Australia’s reconciliation journey by engaging in truth-telling. We aim to ‘care’ for Country through connection and environmental education. We pay our respects to elders past and present and thank them for their care of Country and sharing of knowledge.
