Rev Janet Staines is an ordained Minister of the Word in the Uniting Church and the General Secretary of the Northern Synod located in Darwin, NT. Janet began her vocation in full time ministry in 1994 as a Salvation Army Officer and then transitioned to Minister of the Word in the Uniting Church in 2014. During her ministry Janet has been in congregational placements in rural NSW, western and inner Sydney, the Redlands, Sherwood and Chermside in Brisbane. These have focused on Congregational ministry, Church planting, Rehabilitation and Aged Care Chaplaincy, and Community Engagement. Her placements have also included the role of Chair of the Moreton Rivers Presbytery and membership of church committees and local community boards.
Janet began her tertiary studies at Griffith University with a Bachelor of Arts Modern Asian Studies and has continued her learning with a Diploma is Community Services, a Graduate Diploma in Theology at Charles Sturt University and a Masters in Theology at Flinders University, with a thesis on Women in Leadership. Other studies have included Community Development Practice, AICD Non-for-Profit Governance and the AICD Company Directors Course.
As a Minister, Janet's passion is to create and sustain healthy, holistic and discipling communities of faith. She enjoys working at the intersection of faith and community life, believing that the contemplative and active dimensions of our lives need not be mutually exclusive but rather that our orientation towards God and God's world can connect in profound ways through the work that we do. Janet seeks to ensure that the contemplative and active dimensions of her life interweave, nourish and inform one another so as to bring meaning to and transformation through her work.
